For a year, it allowed him to pay rent, more comfortably pay his bills, and spend time with family. He couldn't afford rent anymore after the program, but he's hopeful the extension will help him again. Basic income programs including those in Austin and Minneapolis showed that most recipients spend their payments on soaring housing costs. For the first year, the project gave participants either $1,000 monthly, $500 monthly with $6,500 upfront, or $50 each month as a control group. Some of his former coworkers found out he was living in his car, and they helped him find a place and pay rent.

Opinion | Inflation Worries and Snickers Bars

To the Editor:Re “The Economic Indicator We Need? A Candy Bar,” by Paul Donovan (Opinion guest essay, Jan. 21):Contrary to Mr. Donovan’s claims, I’m not uninformed about inflation. I know the latest year-over-year inflation rate, as well as the latest month-to-month inflation rate. Given these realities, I have every right to be upset with our disingenuous political and corporate leaders who claim that inflation isn’t a concern. And I have every right to be upset with the numerous opinion pieces, including Mr. Donovan’s, that attempt to explain away the ignorance of my good fortune.

The United States has seen a steady decline in the rate of inflation, and yet many American voters are still upset over the cost of daily life. To understand this perception gap, Paul Donovan, the chief economist of UBS Global Wealth Management, argues, we should consider the cost of a Snickers Bar. In this audio essay, he explains that frequent smaller purchases — like candy bars — shape our experience of the economy. (Reuters) - Brazilian Senate leader Rodrigo Pacheco said on Friday the government would revoke a proposal it made to phase out the extension of payroll tax exemptions for various labor sectors, yielding to the will of the lawmakers on the matter. Speaking at a Lide Group event in Switzerland, Pacheco said that payroll tax exemption for 17 sectors of the economy until 2027 would remain. "The exemption will stand, and there is a commitment from the federal government to...revoke this provisional measure in the part that concerns the payroll exemption," Pacheco said during a panel session at the event in Zurich. Lawmakers voted to extend payroll tax exemptions for 17 labor sectors until 2027, with an impact of 12 billion reais ($2.44 billion) that had not yet been incorporated into the 2024 budget. The government package, which met with immediate political opposition, proposed reducing and gradually phasing out these benefits.

The United States has just experienced one of the biggest collapses in consumer inflation in modern history. More than 12 Snickers bars are sold every second in the United States. That makes Snickers bars a very important part of consumer purchases, and so the price of a Snickers bar should be included in the inflation calculation. Yet Snickers bars do not consume a big portion of most families’ annual budget (at least they usually don’t). With $1,500 a consumer could buy a high-end 55-inch television, or almost four Snickers bars a day for a year.

New York CNN —The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, measured 2.6% annually in November. So, getting that number down to the Fed’s 2% target should happen in no time, right? That’s because much of the run-up in inflation came from pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions and unusual spikes in demand. The reason is that as inflation cools more, the remaining components that work to keep inflation above the Fed’s target are increasingly “sticky,” meaning they’re the least responsive to changes in market conditions. And it’s so far, so good.”That said, though it’s not the Fed’s go-to inflation gauge, Thursday’s CPI report showed that the road to 2% could come with more bumps.

France puts country on 'high' alert for bird flu
  + stars: | 2023-12-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
PARIS, Dec 5 (Reuters) - France raised the risk level of bird flu to 'high' from 'moderate' on Tuesday after the detection of new cases of the disease, forcing poultry farms to keep birds indoors to stem the spread of the highly contagious virus. Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has led to the culling of hundreds of millions birds worldwide in recent years. France said last week that it had detected a first bird flu outbreak on a farm this season in Brittany, in the northwest of the country. The "high" risk level implies that all poultry should be kept inside on farms and additional security measures taken to avoid a spread of the disease. FTSE 100 (.FTSE), FTSE 250 (.FTMC) and International Order Book securities - shares listed in London by overseas companies - had continued to trade normally, the exchange said. It is the second time LSEG has flagged a disruption to trading in smaller stocks on the London market in less than two months. Barclays' stock fell as much as 4.5% in early trading and was last down 2.5% at 1007 GMT. Qatar became Barclays' largest shareholder during the 2008 financial crisis when it injected 4 billion pounds into the UK bank in a deal that helped avert a taxpayer bailout.
